I have taken an extensive look at building Berkley UPC with the recent 
Sun Studio 12 series of compilers.  I have documented my findings in a 
bug report:

Included in my findings is a patch to work-around the error you see 
building opt_inst and dbg_inst configurations.  That patch can be found at:
